Hand disinfectant liquid: professional hand sanitisers

Hand disinfectant liquid is a mandatory hygiene product in healthcare facilities, food processing, and public spaces. Hand sanitisers kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi within 30 seconds — where hand washing with water is insufficient or not possible.

Types of hand disinfectants

Hand disinfectant liquids are classified by spectrum of action and intended use. Hygienic hand disinfectants (meeting EN 1500) are for everyday use — in offices, shopping centres, restaurants. Surgical hand disinfectants (EN 12791) are required before invasive procedures in healthcare. Virucidal disinfectants (EN 14476) kill both enveloped and non-enveloped viruses , essential during pandemics and outbreaks.

By composition, two types dominate: alcohol-based (60,80 % ethanol or isopropanol) and alcohol-free (with benzalkonium chloride or polyhexanide). Alcohol-based products act faster but dry the skin. Hand disinfection vs. hand washing

Disinfection does not replace washing. If hands are visibly soiled, wash first with liquid soap and only then apply disinfectant. On visibly clean hands, disinfectant is used on its own. The WHO recommends disinfection as the primary method when hands are not visibly contaminated , it is faster and more effective than washing.
